How to choose a card reader
Match the reader to the fastest card you use
Older USB 2.0 readers cap out around 30 MB/s, well below what modern SD or microSD cards can deliver. For UHS-II SD cards, choose a UHS-II reader with USB 3.x. For CFexpress, only a dedicated CFexpress reader will reach the rated speed.
Choose the host interface
USB-A is universal and works with most PCs and notebooks. USB-C (Universal Serial Bus Type-C) is more common on newer notebooks and runs at higher rates with a Gen 2 host. A reader with both connectors, or a USB-C reader with an A adapter, covers most office setups.
Single-slot or multi-slot
A single-slot reader is compact and rugged for one specific format. A multi-slot reader is convenient when several formats are in use at the same workstation, but the read speed of one slot is sometimes capped when another slot is active.
What to check before buying

- Does the host PC have a USB 3.x port to take advantage of the reader's full speed?

Why is my card reader slower than the card's rated speed?
The slowest link in the chain sets the rate: card, reader and host. A UHS-II SD card in a UHS-I reader will run at UHS-I speeds. A USB 3.x reader plugged into a USB 2.0 port will run at USB 2.0 speeds. Match all three to reach the card's rated transfer rate.
Do I need a separate reader if my notebook already has an SD slot?
Built-in slots are convenient but often slower and limited to standard SD cards. For UHS-II cards, microSD without an adapter, or CFexpress media, a dedicated external reader is usually faster and avoids wear on the notebook slot.
What is the difference between UHS-I and UHS-II?
UHS-II adds a second row of pins on the SD card and reader, doubling the available bandwidth. A UHS-II card stays compatible with a UHS-I reader, but only at the lower speed.
Are CFexpress and XQD readers interchangeable?
CFexpress Type B and XQD share the same physical connector, and most current CFexpress readers also read XQD cards. CFexpress Type A and Type B are different sizes and need their own readers. Always check the supported standard before ordering.
Can a card reader corrupt data?
A reader does not normally corrupt data on its own. Removing a card while the host is still writing, or losing power mid-transfer, are the common causes of corruption. Always wait for the transfer indicator to clear before pulling the card.
