How to choose a projector
Match lumens to the room and screen size
Lumens are the headline brightness rating. The required lumens scale with screen size and ambient light. A 100-inch screen in a meeting room with normal lighting needs 3,000 to 4,000 lumens. The same screen in a dim cinema room is happy with 2,000 lumens. Underspecifying lumens is the most common mistake in new projector installs.
Resolution for the use case
1080p (Full High-Definition, FHD) is the entry standard, fine for most business and education use. 4K Ultra High-Definition (UHD) has become affordable and matters for detailed content (technical drawings, fine text, home cinema). Pixel shifting (also called e-shift) is a half-step where a 1080p panel projects a 4K-equivalent image; quality varies by model.
Lamp or laser
Lamp projectors are cheaper to buy, more expensive over their life because of lamp replacements. Laser projectors cost more upfront, run for 20,000 hours without lamp service, and reach full brightness instantly without warm-up. For installations running daily, laser is usually the better economic choice.
How to choose a screen
Pick the format and aspect ratio
Fixed-frame screens are the cleanest look for dedicated rooms but do not retract. Motorised screens drop from a ceiling enclosure on demand, suit multi-purpose rooms. Manual pull-down is the budget option. Tripod screens travel for events. Aspect ratio is usually 16:9 to match modern projectors; older 4:3 screens fit older rooms but cut off content from current 16:9 sources.
Match the gain to the lighting
Screen gain measures how much light the screen reflects. Standard matte white screens have a gain of 1.0. High-gain screens (1.4 to 2.4) reflect more light and look brighter in lit rooms but with narrower viewing angles. Grey screens (gain 0.8 to 1.0) sacrifice peak brightness for higher contrast, useful in dim rooms.
Confirm the screen size matches the projector throw
The projector's throw ratio (distance to width) determines the image size at a given distance. For a 100-inch image, a 1.5 throw ratio projector needs about 3 metres of throw distance. The screen's diagonal and the projector's distance must agree.

What is throw ratio and why does it matter?
Throw ratio is the projector's distance from the screen divided by the image width. A 1.5 throw ratio means the projector sits 1.5 times the screen width away. Standard projectors are 1.4 to 2.0; short-throw are 0.4 to 1.0; ultra-short-throw are 0.25 to 0.4. The ratio determines whether the projector physically fits in the room.
Will a higher-lumens projector look better?
Up to a point. Brighter than the room needs makes whites look harsh and reduces contrast. Most rooms benefit from picking the right lumens for the screen size and light, not the highest possible. Headline lumens are also peak; sustained operating brightness in lower power modes is what users actually see.
Do I need a 4K projector?
For typical business presentations and classroom content, 1080p is enough at viewing distance. 4K matters for detailed technical drawings, financial spreadsheets projected for review, and home cinema with quality 4K content. The price gap between 1080p and 4K projectors has narrowed; for new purchases on a 100-inch screen and up, 4K is increasingly the default.
Why is my projected image keystoned?
Keystoning happens when the projector is not perpendicular to the screen, usually because it is mounted higher or lower than centre screen. Most projectors include digital keystone correction, but it works by cropping pixels and slightly reduces image quality. The cleanest fix is mounting at the correct height and angle for the screen.
How long do projection screens last?
Fixed-frame screens with matte white surfaces last 10 to 15 years before yellowing or surface wear becomes obvious. Motorised screens last as long, but the motor and rollers may need service in years 5 to 10. Tripod and pull-down screens see more wear from handling and last 5 to 8 years in regular use.
