How to choose a UPS
Size by real watts, not just VA
UPS units are often labelled in volt-amperes (VA) and watts. The watt figure is the meaningful one for sizing modern equipment, which has switching power supplies. Add the rated wattage of everything that will run on the UPS, then choose a unit comfortably above that, ideally with a 25 to 30 percent margin.
Decide on runtime
For automatic shutdown, 5 to 10 minutes is usually enough. For ride-through to a generator, the UPS only needs to last a few seconds. For longer outages without a generator, larger battery packs or external battery cabinets are required, and the cost rises quickly.
Choose the topology
Offline UPS units stay out of the way and switch to battery only when the mains fails. Line-interactive units regulate voltage continuously and are more tolerant of poor mains. Online double-conversion UPS systems run the load entirely from the inverter, providing a clean, stable output regardless of mains quality.
Plan management
USB or serial communication is enough for a single UPS feeding one or two computers. Network-managed UPS units allow multiple servers to monitor status and shut down in coordinated fashion. For unattended sites, network management is usually a hard requirement.

Outlet count and type
Smaller UPS units use country-specific outlets; rack and server-class units use IEC C13 and C19 outlets. Pick a model with the right outlet types and enough of them for the actual equipment.
Hot-swappable batteries
For UPS units that protect critical equipment, hot-swappable battery packs let the batteries be replaced without taking the load offline. This matters far more in server rooms than in offices.
Cold start
Cold start lets the UPS power equipment from battery even when no mains is present at boot time, which is useful for portable applications and for testing.

Will my UPS protect against lightning?
UPS units include surge protection that handles typical mains spikes. A direct or near-direct lightning strike can exceed any consumer-class device's protection. For sites at high lightning risk, additional facility-level surge protection at the panel is required, in addition to the UPS.
How do I make my computer shut down automatically when the battery is low?

Laser printers draw very high inrush current when the fuser warms up and can overload a UPS sized for office gear. Manufacturers usually recommend not connecting laser printers to a UPS, or using a separate, large unit specifically rated for printer loads.
