How to choose a data cable
Identify the standard, not just the connector
Two HDMI cables can look identical but carry very different data rates. HDMI 2.1 is required for 4K at 120 Hz or 8K. DisplayPort 2.1, Thunderbolt 4 and USB 3.2 Gen 2x2 each have their own certified cable specifications. Confirm the version at the source and the display before ordering.
Pick a length matched to the rate
High-speed standards are sensitive to length. A passive HDMI 2.1 cable is reliable for around 3 meters; longer runs need an active or fiber-optic cable. For DisplayPort and USB 3.x, similar limits apply. Plan the route, then pick the shortest cable that does the job.
Use adapters carefully
An adapter can bridge connector mismatches but cannot add features the host does not have. A USB-C to HDMI adapter only works on a USB-C port that supports DisplayPort alt-mode. A passive HDMI to DisplayPort adapter only works in one direction; the other direction needs an active converter.

Bandwidth and version
Match the version on the cable to the highest version supported on both ends. Buying ahead of the standard rarely pays off because the connector and host need to support it too.
Shielding and build quality
For permanent runs or industrial settings, look for braided shielding, robust strain relief and certified cable assemblies. For desk use, a basic well-rated cable is usually enough.

Frequently asked questions
Will any HDMI cable carry 4K video?
Most modern HDMI cables handle 4K at 60 Hz. For 4K at 120 Hz, 8K, or full HDR with high bit depth, the cable needs to be certified for HDMI 2.1 (Ultra High Speed). The TV or monitor and the source device also need to support those modes.
Why does my USB-C cable not charge my notebook?
USB-C cables vary widely in capability. A cable rated only for USB 2.0 data and 3 A power cannot deliver the 60 W or 100 W needed to charge a notebook. Use a cable rated for the wattage of the charger and verify it supports USB Power Delivery.
Is DisplayPort better than HDMI?
For computer monitors, DisplayPort generally supports higher refresh rates at a given bandwidth and is the standard on workstation graphics cards. HDMI is the dominant standard for televisions and consumer audio-video. For most desktop builds, either works; the choice usually depends on the available outputs.
Do I need a Thunderbolt cable, or will USB-C do?
If both ends are Thunderbolt devices and the workload needs the bandwidth (external GPUs, fast external SSDs, high-resolution displays), a Thunderbolt 3 or 4 certified cable is required. For everyday charging and slower data, a regular USB-C cable is enough.
Why does my video adapter only work in one direction?
HDMI and DisplayPort use different signaling. A passive adapter relies on a host that can output the other standard natively. Active converters include a small circuit that translates one signal to the other and work regardless of host capability.
