Business and education tablets for field, classroom and office use

Tablets fill the space between a smartphone and a laptop: portable enough for a nurse walking the ward or a technician on the factory floor, but with enough screen real estate for documentation, forms and video calls. The right tablet depends heavily on the deployment: classroom management, field service, retail point of sale, and executive travel all pull in different directions.

What this category covers

Apple iPads across current generations (standard, Air, Pro, mini); Android tablets from Samsung, Lenovo and others for budget fleet deployments and specialist Android app use; Windows tablets and 2-in-1 detachables for full Windows application compatibility; and rugged tablets from Panasonic, Zebra and Samsung for industrial, logistics and outdoor environments.

How to choose a tablet for a deployment

Match the OS to the software

If the application runs on iOS, Android or Windows exclusively, the OS choice is made. For new deployments where the application is cross-platform or web-based, iOS (iPadOS) is the most managed-device-friendly with the broadest MDM tooling; Android offers the widest price range; Windows is best when legacy desktop applications are needed alongside the tablet form factor.

Screen size against portability

7 to 8-inch tablets travel in a large pocket and suit scanning and short-form data entry. 10 to 11-inch tablets are the standard for most business and education use — enough space for forms, spreadsheets and video. 12 to 13-inch tablets approach laptop screen size and work well for creative and executive use but are harder to hold one-handed for long periods.

Rugged rating for the environment

Standard tablets survive normal office and home use. For warehouses, construction sites, field service and healthcare environments where drops, dust and liquid exposure are realistic, look for MIL-STD-810 and IP54 or better certification. Rugged tablets cost more upfront but typically survive two to three times longer in harsh environments, lowering the total cost of ownership.

Connectivity for the fleet

Wi-Fi only tablets work where Wi-Fi coverage is reliable. For mobile workers in the field, 4G/5G cellular connectivity removes the dependency on external networks. Check whether the SIM slot accepts the carrier's SIM format and whether the model is carrier-locked before purchasing for a multi-site fleet.

Key features to compare

Processor and RAM (Random Access Memory)

For light browsing, forms and video: entry-level processors with 3–4 GB RAM are adequate. For Office documents, multiple browser tabs and video conferencing: mid-range with 6–8 GB. For creative work, video editing or heavy multitasking: high-end processors with 8–16 GB RAM.

Storage

64 GB is the minimum for a managed business device with apps and documents. 128–256 GB suits most users. Some tablets (most iPads, many Surfaces) do not have expandable storage, so sizing correctly at purchase matters.

What to check before buying

  • Which OS does the target application require?
  • What screen size matches the use case and portability needs?
  • Wi-Fi only or cellular connectivity required?
  • Standard or rugged build for the deployment environment?
  • MDM or management platform compatibility confirmed?

Frequently asked questions

iPad or Android tablet for a business fleet?

iPads have the most mature MDM ecosystem (Apple Business Manager, Jamf, Mosyle) and the most consistent hardware and OS update lifecycle. Android offers more hardware choice and a lower price ceiling, which matters for large price-sensitive fleets. If both work for the application, iOS fleets typically have lower management overhead per device over a three to four year cycle.

Do tablets replace laptops for field workers?

For workers whose tasks are forms, approvals, checklists and reference documents: yes, tablets often replace laptops effectively and are lighter and faster to deploy. For workers who need Office desktop applications, complex spreadsheets or developer tools: a Windows tablet or a laptop remains necessary. The line is the complexity of the application, not the job title.

What is the difference between a tablet and a 2-in-1?

A tablet is a touchscreen slate. A 2-in-1 (or detachable) adds a keyboard that connects magnetically or via a hinge, converting the tablet to a laptop form factor. 2-in-1s suit users who split their time between reading and typing. For users who mostly consume and annotate content, a plain tablet with an occasional Bluetooth keyboard is lighter and simpler.

Can tablets be managed the same way as company laptops?

Yes. Apple Business Manager (iOS/iPadOS), Android Enterprise and Windows Autopilot allow zero-touch enrolment into MDM platforms. Policies, app deployment, remote wipe and inventory tracking are all available. Plan the MDM platform and enrolment method before procurement, not after.

How long do tablets last in a business deployment?

Standard iPads and premium Android tablets are typically usable for four to five years with normal care. Rugged tablets from specialist vendors carry two to three year warranties and are designed for five to seven year field lifecycles. Budget Android tablets under 200 EUR often degrade noticeably within two years of daily use.
