How to choose an access point
Match the Wi-Fi standard to the device mix
Wi-Fi 6 is the current sensible default, with broad client support. Wi-Fi 6E adds the 6 GHz band and helps in offices where 2.4 and 5 GHz are crowded. Wi-Fi 7 is appearing in business gear and adds more dense-environment improvements; worth specifying for new installs to avoid an early refresh.
Pick the AP class for the room
Entry APs cover open offices and small retail. Mid-range APs handle dense conference rooms and meeting spaces. High-density APs (with multiple radios and beamforming) are the right choice for arenas, classrooms with 80-plus laptops, and event venues.
Specify PoE or external power
Most APs are powered over Ethernet. Confirm the PoE class (PoE+ for Wi-Fi 6, often PoE++ for Wi-Fi 6E and 7) against the switch's port output. Some high-end APs need 802.3bt (60-90 W) and won't work on a basic PoE+ switch.
Decide on managed or standalone
Standalone APs are configured one-by-one through their own web UI. Workable for very small installs. Managed APs (cloud or controller) take a single configuration that propagates to all APs and let users roam without dropping. For more than 2-3 APs, managed is the right choice.

Spatial streams and antenna count
2x2 APs are typical for office use; 4x4 APs offer higher per-client throughput and better range; 8x8 APs are reserved for high-density and outdoor long-range deployments. More streams means higher cost and more PoE draw.
Roaming features
802.11k, 802.11v and 802.11r (fast roaming) reduce the time a client takes to switch between APs. Important for voice over Wi-Fi, video conferencing on phones and laptops, and any application sensitive to brief disconnections.
External antenna support
Most indoor APs have internal antennas. Outdoor and warehouse APs often offer external antenna ports for sectoral, omnidirectional or high-gain antennas, useful for covering long corridors or specific areas.

Cloud-managed wins for multi-site networks: one dashboard, automatic updates, no on-site appliance to fail. Hardware controllers win for sites with poor internet, strict data sovereignty rules, or when avoiding subscription fees matters more than central visibility. Most new business deployments choose cloud-managed.
Can I mix Wi-Fi 5, 6 and 6E APs in the same network?
Yes, when they share the same management platform. Each AP advertises the standards it supports; clients connect at the highest mutually-supported rate. A mixed estate is common during gradual refreshes; new APs replace older ones one at a time without disrupting the network.
What is the difference between an access point and a router with Wi-Fi?
A router with Wi-Fi includes routing, firewall, DHCP and a wireless radio in one box, designed for small networks where one device handles everything. An access point is just the wireless radio, designed to plug into an existing wired network. Business networks separate the functions: a dedicated router or firewall handles routing, and dedicated APs handle Wi-Fi.
How far does an indoor AP reach?
In a typical office (drywall, glass, light cubicle walls), 25-40 metres at usable speed. Concrete walls, metal-framed glass and dense furniture reduce that. Floor-to-floor signal does not reliably penetrate concrete slabs; plan one AP per floor minimum.
Do I need a wireless intrusion detection system?
For most offices, the wireless management platform's basic rogue-AP detection is enough. Dedicated WIDS/WIPS makes sense in regulated environments (healthcare, finance) and in any setting where wireless attacks are a real concern. The capability is built into many controller and cloud platforms; a separate system is rarely needed.
