Pick the form factor
Mid-tower is the default; full-tower gives extra room for cooling and storage; small form factor (SFF) and ultra-small form factor (USFF) save desk and rack space but limit expansion and cooling. Memory
16 GB is the modern minimum for new office desktops; 32 GB suits power users; 64 GB and above for engineering and creative work. ECC memory, where supported, reduces silent data corruption on long-running calculations.
Graphics
Integrated graphics handle office work, multiple displays at standard resolutions, and video calls. Discrete graphics matter for gaming, 3D rendering, video editing, machine learning and CAD. For workstations, certified workstation GPUs (Nvidia RTX A-series, AMD Radeon Pro) come with ISV-certified drivers.

Should we buy SFF or mid-tower desktops?
SFF (small form factor) saves desk space and is the default for office roles. Mid-tower gives room for discrete graphics, larger cooling and more drives, useful for engineering, creative and gaming roles. The price difference is small; the deciding factor is desk space against expansion needs.
How long does a business desktop last?
Five to seven years is the typical service life with one mid-life memory or storage upgrade. The CPU and motherboard determine when the platform stops being useful for current software; storage and memory upgrades extend life cheaply for one or two years past that.
Are gaming desktops good for engineering?
For solo work where ISV certification is not required (3D modelling for hobby projects, video editing, programming), a high-end gaming desktop offers strong performance per dollar. For commercial CAD, simulation and customers who require certified hardware, a workstation-class machine with certified GPU and ECC memory is the safer choice.
Do desktops need a UPS?
Yes for any user whose work would be lost in a power cut. A small UPS keeps the desktop running long enough to save and shut down cleanly. For workstations running long calculations, a UPS pays back the first time it prevents a multi-hour render from being lost.
Can desktops be managed at the same level as notebooks?
