Network cabling: patch leads, bulk cable and structured wiring

Cabling is the part of the network that does not appear in marketing slides but determines how the network actually performs. Properly specified, terminated and tidy cabling lasts a decade or more and runs whatever speed standard comes next; sloppy cabling becomes the slow part of the network the year after install.

How to choose network cabling

Pick the cable category for the speed and the future

Cat 5e supports up to 1 GbE and is fine for short runs at gigabit. Cat 6 supports 1 GbE comfortably and 10 GbE for runs up to 55 metres. Cat 6A supports 10 GbE for the full 100 metres and is the recommended default for new structured cabling. Cat 8 supports 25 and 40 GbE for short runs and is mostly used between top-of-rack switches and servers.

Match patch lead length to the actual run

Patch leads come in standard lengths from 0.25 to 30 metres. Buying patch leads close to the actual run length (with a small margin for routing) keeps the install tidy. Leftover slack from oversized leads is the most common cause of messy server racks.

Decide on stranded versus solid copper

Patch leads use stranded copper for flexibility and the ability to bend repeatedly without breaking. Bulk cable for in-wall and structured runs is solid copper, terminated at both ends with keystone modules. Mixing them up causes early failures.

Plan terminations alongside the cable

Bulk cable needs keystone modules at both ends; pre-terminated patch leads do not. For new structured installs, specify keystones, faceplates and patch panels alongside the cable. The bare cable is cheap; the labour to terminate it correctly is the bigger cost.

Key features to compare

Shielding

Unshielded twisted pair (UTP) is fine for typical office environments. Shielded twisted pair (STP, F/UTP, S/FTP) reduces electromagnetic interference and is recommended in industrial settings, near motors and high-voltage gear, or for runs longer than 50 metres at 10 GbE.

Jacket type

Standard PVC jackets are fine for most installs. Plenum-rated (CMP) and riser-rated (CMR) jackets are required by code for runs above ceilings, in elevator shafts and between floors. Outdoor cable has UV-resistant jackets and gel-filled cores for direct burial.

Fibre type

Multimode fibre (OM3, OM4, OM5) is cheaper and good for runs within a building (up to 300 metres at 10 GbE on OM4). Single-mode fibre is required for longer runs and runs between buildings; the transceivers cost more but the fibre itself is similar.

What to check before buying

  • Cable category matched to the network speed today and the next upgrade?
  • Patch leads sized for the actual run with a small margin?
  • Bulk cable plus terminations specified together?
  • Shielded or unshielded for the environment?
  • Plenum or riser rating required by local code?

Frequently asked questions

What cable category should I install for new construction?

Cat 6A is the modern default for structured cabling. It supports 10 GbE at the full 100-metre length, which avoids re-pulling cable when the network speed standard moves up. The cost premium over Cat 6 is small at install time and large to retro-fit later.

Do I really need shielded cable in an office?

Usually not. Standard UTP works fine in offices with normal lighting and equipment. Shielded cable is worth specifying near electrical panels, in industrial environments with motors and contactors, or for cable trays carrying high-voltage power alongside the network cables.

How long can a network cable run?

Cat 5e, Cat 6 and Cat 6A copper are rated to 100 metres total length, including the patch lead at each end. For longer runs, use a switch or a fibre link. A single 100-metre run includes any patch leads at both ends; the in-wall portion is typically 90 metres with 5-metre patch leads at each end.

Should I terminate cables myself or buy pre-made patch leads?

For patch leads under 5 metres, factory-made leads are cheaper, more reliable and faster to install. For long runs and structured cabling, terminate keystones at the ends of the bulk cable yourself or with a contractor. Cheap field-terminated patch leads are a common source of intermittent network problems.

Is fibre cabling worth running between buildings?

Almost always. Fibre is immune to electrical interference, ground potential differences and lightning damage that affect copper between buildings. The fibre itself is cheap; the transceivers and the contractor's trenching are the bigger costs, and they pay back over the install's life.
