How to choose chargers and powerbanks

Match wattage to the phone's fast-charging spec

iPhone 15 fast charges at 27 W; Pixel 8 at 27 W; Galaxy S24 at 25 W; Galaxy S24 Ultra at 45 W. Fast-charging Android flagships from Chinese brands sometimes go to 100 W or more. Pick a charger that meets or slightly exceeds the phone's fast-charging spec; going much higher gives no extra speed.

Decide on single-port or multi-port

For travel, a single-port 30 W to 65 W charger covers a phone and lighter laptops. For desk use, a multi-port charger with two USB-C and one USB-A handles phone, tablet and laptop or earbuds simultaneously. Multi-port chargers split wattage across ports; check the per-port spec, not just the total.

Pick the right wireless standard

Qi works with most current phones at up to 15 W. MagSafe (iPhone) goes to 25 W with magnetic alignment. Newer Qi2 brings the magnetic alignment to Android. For fleet desks, wired charging is faster and more reliable; wireless is convenient but slower and warmer.

Size powerbanks for the actual need

GaN versus traditional chargers

Gallium Nitride (GaN) chargers are smaller and lighter than silicon-based chargers at the same wattage. For travel, GaN saves real space in the bag. For desk use, the size difference is less important.

Pass-through charging on powerbanks

Pass-through lets the powerbank charge devices while charging itself. This is useful for users who plug in once at night and want both their phone and powerbank ready in the morning, but it shortens the powerbank's battery life slightly.

Charging standards

Power Delivery (PD) is the universal fast-charging standard for USB-C. Quick Charge (QC) is Qualcomm's older standard, still common on Android. Most current chargers support both. Phone-specific protocols (Apple, Samsung Super Fast Charging) are usually compatible with PD or QC.

Why does my new charger not fast-charge my phone?

The most common reasons are: charger wattage below the phone's fast-charge spec, cable not rated for the wattage, or the charger missing the phone's specific fast-charge protocol. Use a USB-C PD charger of the right wattage with a certified cable to cover most phones.

Are wireless chargers worth it?

For desk and bedside use, yes for convenience. They are slower than wired (15 W versus 27 W to 45 W on most phones), generate more heat (which slightly shortens battery life), and need the phone aligned correctly. For travel and primary charging, wired is still faster and more reliable.

Can I take a powerbank on a plane?

Yes in cabin baggage; powerbanks are not allowed in checked luggage. Most airlines cap capacity at 27,000 mAh (about 100 Wh). Higher capacity needs airline approval and is rarely allowed. Always carry powerbanks in cabin bags.

What is GaN and why does it matter?
