How many devices can I connect to one USB hub?

The USB specification allows up to 127 devices per host controller, including hubs, but real-world limits are much lower. Bandwidth and power are the practical constraints. Plan for the actual mix of devices, not the theoretical maximum.

Can I daisy-chain hubs?

Yes, hubs can be chained, but every level adds latency and reduces available bandwidth. For more than a handful of devices, an externally powered hub with enough ports is more reliable than chaining smaller hubs.

Will a USB 3.x hub make my USB 2.0 devices faster?

No. The hub does not change the speed of devices plugged into it. A USB 2.0 keyboard or mouse runs at USB 2.0 speeds whether connected to a USB 2.0 or USB 3.x hub. The benefit appears when several USB 3.x devices share the upstream link.

Why does my external drive disconnect on a hub?

Most often this is a power issue: a bus-powered hub cannot supply enough current for the drive. Move the drive to an externally powered hub or a port directly on the host machine. Faulty cables and worn connectors are the next most likely cause.

What is the difference between a hub and a dock?

A hub mainly multiplies USB ports. A dock adds a wider mix of interfaces (display outputs, Ethernet, audio) and is built for permanent desk use, often with its own power supply and a single cable to the notebook. The line between the two has blurred in recent USB-C devices.
