What is the difference between a drum unit and a toner cartridge?
The toner cartridge holds the toner powder. The drum unit (also called imaging unit or photoreceptor) is the cylinder that picks up toner and transfers it to paper. On some printers they are combined into a single all-in-one cartridge; on others they are separate, with the drum lasting through several toner replacements. Separate drums are cheaper per page over the printer's life.
Why does my printer warn that the waste toner box is full?
Laser printers collect a small amount of excess toner from each page in a waste container. Once the container fills (typically every 30,000 to 100,000 pages), the printer warns and eventually refuses to print until the container is replaced. The container itself is inexpensive; replacing it on schedule avoids printer downtime.
What does a fuser do?
The fuser is the hot roller assembly that melts toner onto paper. It runs at around 200 degrees Celsius and consists of pressure rollers and a heating element. Over time, the rollers wear and the heating element ages; replacement is normally needed every 100,000 to 300,000 pages. Symptoms of a worn fuser include smearing, partially fused toner that can be brushed off, or fuser error codes.
Should the drum be replaced at the same time as the toner?
Only if the drum has reached its rated life. Drum life is usually 2 to 4 times longer than toner life. Replacing the drum prematurely wastes money; running it past its rated life causes print quality issues. The printer's drum life counter is the reference; replace at 90 percent or when print quality starts to fade.
Can I install a fuser unit myself?
On some office printers, fusers are user-replaceable through a service door. On others, fuser replacement is a technician service item. The printer's maintenance documentation indicates which model class it belongs to. User-replaceable fusers are designed to be swapped without tools in 5 to 10 minutes.
