A video wall solves a problem a single panel cannot: an image larger than any one screen, on a wall that may not be a tidy rectangle. Several panels are tiled together, controlled as one, and the result can carry a single huge picture, a grid of separate sources, or both at once depending on the room's purpose. The trade-off is bezels between panels and a slightly more involved install plan than a single screen.

How to plan a video wall
Decide the matrix and the total size
2x2, 3x3 and 4x4 are common matrices. The total image size is the panel size times the matrix; a 3x3 grid of 55-inch panels is roughly 165 inches wide. Specify the matrix from the wall dimensions and viewing distance rather than buying "more panels because it looks impressive."
Pick bezel width to suit the use
For continuous-image installs (advertising, lobby, exhibition) the thinnest bezels matter; aim for under 2 mm bezel-to-bezel. For grid-of-sources installs (control rooms showing separate feeds), wider bezels of 3 to 5 mm are acceptable and cheaper. Premium 0.88 mm bezel panels exist but cost more than double the standard 3.5 mm ones.
Match the controller to the content
Hardware video wall processors handle the stitching with low latency, support multiple input sources and dynamic layouts, and are the right choice for control rooms. Software-based stitching using a single Personal Computer (PC) with multiple outputs works for static signage. Cloud-managed signage platforms handle distributed video walls across multiple sites.
Plan the mount with service access
Pop-out mounts pull individual panels forward for service without dismantling neighbouring panels. Recessed-in-wall mounts give a flush look but are harder to service. Specify mount type alongside the panels; replacing a mid-array panel later is otherwise painful.

Many video wall panels accept a single video input and pass the signal to the next panel in the chain, with each panel cropping the relevant portion. This simplifies cabling for static layouts; dynamic layouts need a controller.
Calibration
Panels in a video wall need uniform colour and brightness. Premium panels include factory calibration with serial-numbered tracking; mid-range panels need on-site calibration with a probe to match across the array.

How long do video walls last?
Commercial-grade panels run 50,000 hours (about 17 years at 8 hours a day, or 5.7 years at 24/7) before backlight degradation becomes obvious. Do video walls need redundant controllers?
For mission-critical 24/7 installs (control rooms, broadcast), yes. Most retail and corporate installs run a single controller and accept brief downtime during a controller swap. Specify based on the cost of the install going dark for a few hours.
What viewing distance is comfortable for a video wall?
The minimum comfortable distance is roughly 1.5 to 2 times the panel height (not the wall height) for casual viewing, closer for content meant to be read. For lobby installs viewed from 5 to 30 metres away, panel pixel pitch and brightness matter more than absolute resolution.
