Other notebook accessories

This catch-all groups the smaller items kept on hand for a notebook fleet that do not need their own subcategory: replacement batteries, security locks, charging trolleys for shared environments, screen privacy filters, cleaning supplies and similar consumables. None are big-ticket items individually, but together they are what keeps a notebook fleet usable day to day.

What this category covers

Replacement notebook batteries (where the model allows user service); Kensington and Noble security cable locks; charging trolleys and cabinets for school and shared environments; screen privacy filters; replacement keyboards and palmrests sold as service parts; cleaning kits and microfibre cloths; and other small items that do not fit into bags, chargers or docks.

What to look for

Replacement batteries

Most current business notebooks have internal batteries that are not user-serviceable; replacement is a service operation done by an authorised partner. Older notebooks with removable batteries still have spares available, but stock thins out three to five years after the model's release. For long-life fleets, ordering a spare batch early is cheaper than chasing parts in year five.

Security locks

Kensington and Noble lock slots are standard on most business notebooks. Cable locks deter casual theft from desks, hot-desk environments and trade show stands. Combination locks save key management; keyed locks are slightly faster to use. Confirm the notebook actually has a lock slot; some thin notebooks have removed it.

Charging trolleys and cabinets

Schools, libraries and shared work environments benefit from a single mobile cabinet that charges and stores 16, 24 or 32 notebooks overnight. Specifications to compare are capacity, ventilation, charging method (individual outlets versus a single power strip), and whether tablets and Chromebooks are supported alongside notebooks.

Screen privacy filters

Privacy filters narrow the screen's viewing angle so on-screen content is only visible from directly in front. Useful in open offices, on flights and in public transport. Sized to the exact screen; an undersized filter leaves edges exposed, an oversized one does not adhere properly.

Cleaning supplies

Microfibre cloths, screen-safe cleaning solutions and compressed-air cans for keyboards. Cheap to keep on hand and noticeably extend the working life of a notebook, especially the screen and the trackpad surface.

What to check before buying

  • For batteries: exact notebook model and the manufacturer's battery part number; is the battery user-serviceable or service-only?
  • For locks: does the notebook have a Kensington or Noble lock slot, and which one?
  • For trolleys: how many notebooks, what mix of devices, and where will it live?
  • For privacy filters: exact screen size and aspect ratio (16:9 versus 16:10)?
  • For consumables: one-off purchase or recurring supply for an office?

Frequently asked questions

Can I replace the battery in a current ultraportable myself?

Usually not without specialised tools and instructions. Current ultraportables have internal batteries glued or screwed to the chassis, and replacement is a workshop operation. Vendor service centres and authorised partners do this routinely; doing it yourself risks damage to the chassis or the battery cell.

Are third-party replacement batteries safe?

Reputable third-party batteries from established cell manufacturers are usually fine. Avoid unbranded batteries from unknown sources; battery faults can cause serious damage. For warranty-sensitive fleets, vendor-original batteries remove that question.

Do security locks actually deter theft?

For casual theft from desks, conferences and hot desks, yes. A determined thief with cutting tools can defeat any cable lock; the lock's job is to make the notebook a less attractive target than an unlocked one nearby. For high-value workstations or shared spaces, locks pay for themselves quickly.

What is the difference between Kensington and Noble lock slots?

Two competing standards for the small slot used to anchor a cable lock. Both work the same way mechanically. Most current notebooks have one or the other; thinner ultraportables sometimes have neither. Match the lock to the slot type printed in the notebook spec.

Are privacy filters cleanable?

Yes, with a soft cloth and a screen-safe cleaning solution. Avoid alcohol-based cleaners on the filter surface, which can dull the privacy coating over time. Filters last several years with normal cleaning.
