Choosing routers and bridges for offices, branch sites and homes

The router sits at the edge of the network, deciding what goes where. The right model depends on internet speed, the number of users, whether the site needs VPN connectivity to other locations, and whether wireless is built in or handled by separate access points. A correctly sized router runs for years; an undersized one becomes the slowest part of the connection within months.

How to choose a router

Match the WAN side to the internet service

Confirm the WAN port type (Gigabit Ethernet, 2.5 GbE, 10 GbE, SFP) and the maximum routing throughput against the actual internet speed. A gigabit-rated router will not deliver gigabit if its NAT throughput is lower; check the manufacturer's tested throughput figure for routing, NAT and firewall enabled.

Pick the right LAN side

Small offices may want a router with built-in 4 to 8 LAN ports; larger sites pair a router with separate switches and choose a router with one or two LAN ports for the uplink. PoE on the router is uncommon; PoE belongs on the switch layer.

Decide on built-in versus separate wireless

For small offices and homes, an all-in-one router with Wi-Fi is simpler and cheaper. For multi-room installs and any space larger than 80 to 100 m², separate access points (managed by the router or by a controller) give better coverage than a single all-in-one unit.

Plan for VPN and security features

Site-to-site VPN, remote access VPN, firewall rules, intrusion detection and content filtering all live on the router. Specify these features at purchase; retro-fitting them with a separate appliance later is more expensive and complicates the network.

Routing throughput

The headline WAN port speed and the real routing throughput often differ. Look for the manufacturer's tested figure with NAT and firewall enabled; this is what users will actually experience.

VPN performance

VPN throughput is often a fraction of the unencrypted figure. For sites running heavy site-to-site VPN traffic, choose a router with hardware VPN acceleration.

Multi-WAN and failover

Multi-WAN routers can fail over between two internet connections, useful for sites that cannot afford downtime. Some support load balancing across both connections in normal operation.

What to check before buying

  • Internet speed today and the realistic upgrade path?
  • Number of concurrent users and devices?
  • VPN, firewall and security features required?
  • Built-in Wi-Fi or separate access points?
  • Management tooling: standalone web UI, cloud-managed, or part of an existing platform?

Frequently asked questions

Do I need a separate router if my modem already has one?

Many ISP-supplied modems include a basic router, which is fine for home use. For business use, a separate router gives more control, better firewall and VPN features, and avoids forced ISP firmware upgrades. Most business installs put the ISP modem in bridge mode and run a dedicated router behind it.

What is a wireless bridge used for?

Point-to-point wireless bridges connect two buildings or remote sites without trenching cable, using directional antennas to send a focused wireless link between them. Typical ranges run from a few hundred metres to several kilometres at speeds from 100 Mbps to multi-gigabit. They are common between a main office and a warehouse, or between buildings on a campus.

How many users can a router handle?

The headline user count in marketing assumes light browsing. Real numbers depend on the workload: a 50-user web-and-email office and a 50-user video-editing office have very different demands. Match the router's tested NAT throughput and concurrent connection limit to the actual mix of traffic, not the headline.

Cloud-managed or locally-managed router?

Cloud-managed routers are easier to deploy at scale across multiple sites and give central visibility. Locally-managed routers cost less in subscription fees and keep working if the cloud service is unreachable. Most multi-site businesses settle on cloud-managed; single-site offices often prefer local for the lack of recurring fees.

Is Wi-Fi 6 or Wi-Fi 7 worth specifying in a new router?

For new purchases, yes. Wi-Fi 6 is now the baseline; Wi-Fi 7 is appearing in business gear and adds further improvements in dense environments. The price premium over older Wi-Fi 5 has narrowed enough that buying older standards on a new install rarely pays back.
