Memory works best in dual-channel mode with two identical modules. Single-module kits work but lose memory bandwidth. Adding a third module of a different brand or speed often forces the system to a slower common speed.

Higher-speed DDR5 (above 6000 MT/s) and tight-timing DDR4 only run at advertised speed on motherboards that have validated the kit. The motherboard's QVL is the authoritative reference. Kits not on the list often boot at a lower speed.

Capacity per module and total kit size
Modules come in 8, 16, 32 and 48 GB sizes for DDR5, and similar steps for DDR4. The motherboard manual lists the maximum capacity per slot. Filling all slots with smaller modules usually runs at lower speeds than two larger modules.
Speed and latency
Speed is in MT/s (megatransfers per second). CAS latency (CL) is the response time in clock cycles. A higher speed with slightly higher CL often performs as well as a lower speed with tight CL. The platform's supported speed is the first constraint.
Heat spreaders and clearance
Tall heat spreaders can interfere with large CPU coolers. For air coolers with a wide footprint, low-profile DIMMs are a safer choice; check the cooler manufacturer's clearance figures.

Can I install DDR5 in a DDR4 motherboard?
No. The slots are keyed differently and the modules will not seat in the wrong slot. Confirm the generation from the motherboard manual before ordering.
Should I buy two 16 GB or one 32 GB module?
Two 16 GB modules in dual channel are usually faster than a single 32 GB module of the same speed, because the memory controller can read and write both channels in parallel. The single-module option only makes sense as a stepping stone to a future kit.
How do I enable the rated speed?
Most kits boot at a slower JEDEC default speed. Enable the XMP profile (Intel) or EXPO profile (AMD) in the BIOS to run at the rated speed. If the system becomes unstable, drop one step in speed or load the QVL-recommended profile.
Does memory speed matter for office work?
Not much. The difference between baseline DDR5 5600 MT/s and high-end 7200 MT/s is small for office software. Capacity is the more important factor for everyday use; speed matters more in games, simulation and content creation.
What does CAS latency mean in practice?
CAS latency is the number of clock cycles between a request and the first piece of data. Combined with the speed, it determines actual response time in nanoseconds. Comparing speed alone or CAS alone can mislead; the combination is what matters.
